Building a Business on eBay

By Jillian | April 17, 2009

Thousands of new millionaires have been created through eBay.  EBay can be a great way to get started making money on the Internet, because is a ready-to-use platform for building a business.  The site offers a huge volume of instant traffic, and not just browsers, but serious buyers looking for products.

Obviously, EBay is much more than a place to sell the stuff you clean out of your garage… but that is a way to begin.  In fact, experienced eBay business owners recommend you begin by getting comfortable selling a few small items on the site, and buying some items in eBay auctions.  Today over 200 million people all over the world buy and sell on eBay.  eBay has fattened the wallets of individuals, fostered the creation of many small businesses, and launched multimillion dollar companies.

Dozens of eBay competitors have now jumped into the fray, notably Yahoo! Auctions, Bidz.com, Amazon, ePier, OnlineAuction.com, and uBid.com.   Many of the biggest gurus in the Internet marketing world got their start on eBay.

Obviously, selling items on eBay and the other auction sites is a promising business model.  But even if you are using another Internet business model, you can drive traffic to your website and build your mailing list through offering your products on eBay.

If you like the safety of launching your Internet business in a structured environment, with ongoing support, then the online auction sites may be perfect for you.  If you are a collector, or you just love to buy and sell, you’ll find the auctions fun and satisfying.  Another real benefit is the quick cash return.  You can pull something out of your attic, or come across a great find at your local thrift store, post it on eBay, and sell it three days later.

eBay is the largest online auction site, and it is rated the best site overall for users, so it’s a good place to begin.  But once you’ve mastered eBay, and understand its policies and guidelines, you may want to expand and try the other auction sites as well.
