WordPress – Getting the Help I Needed

By Jillian | June 6, 2009

As you may know, I’m moderately technically challenged.  I used to say I was completely inept technically, but over the past few years I’ve come to realize that isn’t really accurate.  After all, I learned to build websites in FrontPage, and I’ve learned a variety of (admittedly user-friendly) technologies involved in running my Internet businesses.

Still, I’ve been resisting learning WordPress.  You may know that WordPress is the software platform used to build many blogs, including this one.  As I’ve said before, the search engines love WordPress, and it’s now possible to build entire websites in WordPress.

Thus far, I’ve depended on expert help to create my WordPress blogs.  I’ll undoubtedly continue to need some expert help, unless I break down and learn HTML, because many modifications to WordPress sites involve changing the HTML code.  But as my friends kept telling me, creating a basic blog in WordPress is not brain surgery.

So, I got started when I was out in California, by having my friend Chris Rodriguez of RichDreams.com walk me through the process.  It took him four hours, but in all honesty, more than half of that was consumed by my trying to decide which theme I wanted to use on my project.  (Chris didn’t really mind – it gave him time to keep up with the Lakers game.)

Anyway, fast forward until I’m back home in Austin.  Once I had the basic setup completed, I was ready to move on by uploading some of the bells and whistles.  And that’s when I got in over my head.

Fortunately, the help I needed wasn’t too far away.  I simply called the technical help desk at my server company, and they came to my rescue.  Steve walked me through the entire process, showing me where I had been making mistakes, and providing me with the correct information.  He even patiently stayed on the line until I had completed uploading what I needed.

My server company offers Fantastico, which makes installing WordPress a piece of cake.  They aren’t responsible for what I do with the software afterwards, or helping me with modifications. But as I’ve found before with these guys, they go the extra mile to support their customers.

So here’s a friendly reminder.  If you have a website, or plan to get online soon, you’ll find the best pricing, dependability and service at:

www.CashMachineDomains.com

In fact, you can host unlimited domains all at the low monthly price of $4.95.  The above is my affiliate link, BTW.  I cannot recommend these guys highly enough.
